Unifor is committed to improving the lives of workers and their families in Canada and around the world. In 2015, Unifor Social Justice Fund made a generous and significant contribution to support UNHCR’s Lifeline program.
“Unifor members have been deeply touched by the refugee crisis in Syria,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor’s national president. “We must respond with humanity and generosity.”
The Fund has also partnered with a Canadian settlement organization to sponsor the resettlement of five Syrian refugee families in Canada, further augmenting its commitment to social justice and protecting human rights.
Impact
Unifor Social Justice Fund’s Lifeline support means that some of the most vulnerable Syrian refugee families currently living in Jordan’s urban areas (over 80% of refugees in Jordan live outside of camps), will receive direct monthly cash assistance to help them survive. In this secure, high-tech, low-cost program, in which 97% of funding goes directly to the families, impoverished refugees can keep their children in school, buy desperately needed medicines and afford winter heating supplies.
Abu Ahmed, an injured Syrian refugee living with his family in Jordan, talks about the difference UNHCR’s monthly cash assistance program has made to their family.
