OTTAWA – Mexico’s asylum system faces sustained pressure due to continued political and social instability in the region, violence, insecurity, and the devastating impact of natural disasters and climate change. in 2023, the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) registered a record 140,000 asylum applications. Mexico is expected to be among the top five countries with the largest number of asylum applications globally.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, with the support of the Government of Canada, will expand two critical projects in Mexico to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the country’s asylum system. The UNHCR is receiving $6 million over 21 months from the Government of Canada to carry out this critical work.

Through these projects, UNHCR will contribute to COMAR’s ongoing digital transformation, supporting data verification, digitization, reorganization of physical files, and the implementation of a robust file tracking system. in addition, UNHCR will contribute to the establishment of a multi-service centre that will provide comprehensive services to asylum-seekers, refugees, and other vulnerable people on the move. through this centre, people on the move will be connected with services provided by government entities and a range of civil society organizations.

These projects come at a critical time and will be instrumental in strengthening Mexico’s capacity to provide comprehensive assistance to asylum-seekers, refugees, and other vulnerable people on the move.
